HRCM condemns Police use of water cannons on female protestors

MDP women protesters gather near the President's Office.
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned the tactics employed by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to disperse the Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) female members gathered in front of the president's office yesterday.
The female protestors were dispersed by spraying salt water at high pressure from a water cannon.

In statement issued by HRCM it was stated that everyone should be entitled to freedom of assembly as granted by article 32 of the constitution. The commission advised that police used methods of crowd dispersion that would not compromise women’s dignity and would cause least harm to protestors.

MDP’s female supporters gathered by the president’s office yesterday to submit letters calling on the president to resign, claiming that former president Mohamed Nasheed was ousted through a coup d'etat.

The women who were seated on the road called for an end to police brutality, implementation of justice and an early presidential election.
